Anti- Competitive Spirit

I never fancied myself a runner but I needed to find a way to take my fitness out of the gym and be able to exercise while traveling so I became a runner. My rhythm is pretty basic - music in my headphones, enough clothes to keep me warm and I hit the streets.

If the weather permits and sometimes when it doesn't, I run next to my son as he bikes to kindergarten, drop-him off, and then I run back home.  I thought I was doing 3 miles with this trek but my ever techie partner brought his smartphone with a "track your run" app" on my last run and revealed that I was only doing a bit more than 2 miles.  On my way home I decided to lap the planetarium park (about 800 meters around) a few times to hit that 3 mile mark.  As I was coasting through my laps, I was struck by how easy it was this time when last weekend, it wasn't so easy.
Cool how he can be earnest with people who are clearly sniffing glue.

Don't get caught up

Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def talks about reality while others explore illusion. His name has changed but his flow is still strong.

Friends until they speak...

Jews and Christians that come together behind unquestioning support for the state of Israel have a tenuous relationship.  When they have a conversation, it is clear that they are living in completely different worlds.  The reality is that many evangelical Christians support Israel for reasons that could be seen as anti-Semitic and Jewish acceptance of that political and financial support is more about politics than inter-faith friendship and understanding.

Ridiculous Black History

You don't get rid of racism by not talking about it just like you don't get rid of cancer by not talking about it. While the fact that we still need black history month is ridiculous, BHM is necessary because black history is largely invisible from the mainstream historical narrative. Freeman makes a good point but his idea that we could just act as if racism does not matter in our personal interactions and that would minimize the marginalization and violent reality that systematic racism manifests in the lives of people of color is misguided. If only.
